As the official voice of the foreign real estate industry in the United States and the pre-eminent global real estate organization, the Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate (AFIRE) represents the interests of nearly 200 investing organizations from 21 different countries. AFIRE is a not-for-profit association of international real estate investors with headquarters in Washington, DC. The organization was founded in 1988 with strong support from Dutch pension funds and German investment firms now constitute the largest nationality of investors. While inbound investment into the US remains our members' common bond, their portfolios have become increasingly global in scope.
Representing the "who's who" in the global real estate investment industry, AFIRE membership is exclusive to principals and senior executives. AFIRE provides a platform for top investors to communicate through global meetings in the US, Europe, and key cities around the world. From legislation and tax regulations to informative publications and resources, AFIRE covers the hottest topics to ensure that the foreign investor is as informed as the domestic investor.
“AFIRE members are like a group of friends who happen to work in the same industry.”
— German Private Equity Fund
“AFIRE is an institutional investor-centric group that offers excellent networking events with like-minded investors.”
— Canadian Pension Fund
“The speakers at the conferences are unparalleled and deliver thought-provoking ideas that reach far beyond real estate into the realms of global economics, politics and history.”
— Swiss Pension Fund
“Consistently high quality/seniority of members and attendees.”
— German Insurance Company
“The most important feature of AFIRE is that it is both focussed in terms of its membership (principal/investor-driven) and in terms of its subject matter (inbound investment into US). Most other organisations try to be too many things and please all the people all of the time. As a result they end up less valuable. The consequence of AFIRE's focus is that it is a 'club' with a smallish number of members and all the better for it.”
— UK Institutional Investor
“To meet like-minded foreign investors in US real estate in an informal setting.”
— Dutch Pension Fund
“It is a platform to comingle with institutional investors in US real estate at a very high level, concentrated in one place.
— Middle Eastern Institutional Investor
“Ability to network and liaise with peer investors to compare thoughts on investment strategy, deal structuring, tax issues.”
— Asian Sovereign Wealth Fund
“The ability to engage with other like-minded institutional investors at a senior level is the key attraction; this is supplemented by some very strong technical commentary of major topics of mutual interest.”
— UK Insurance Company
AFIRE typically holds four educational conferences each year, as well as exclusive brunch gatherings at MIPIM and EXPO REAL.
The Winter Conference is an annual two-day meeting held in February in New York City. Featured topics are specific to the US, with a portion directly focused on New York City and the surrounding areas. Results of the Annual Survey, a member survey highlighting trends in international real estate investment, are presented at the Winter Conference.
The European Conference takes place during June in a European city, formerly in Amsterdam, Cologne, London, Berlin, and Paris. While there is a strong focus on the local regions, the European Conference also covers US real estate topics and is opportune for global networking.
AFIRE's Annual Membership Meeting is held in September and encompasses all aspects of US real estate, with meeting locations rotating between Washington, DC, and other key US cities, including Boston, San Francisco and Chicago. Distinguished US policy makers and opinion leaders – including George W. Bush, Gordon Brown, Madeleine Albright, and General Colin Powell – are among the list of influential professionals who have spoken at AFIRE Membership Meetings.
AFIRE also holds Outreach Conferences in various locations, such as Stockholm, Australia, Toronto, Dublin and Dubai. Attendance at meetings is restricted to AFIRE members and specifically invited guests.
